用于水處理活性炭一般分為以下幾類：
粉狀活性炭：一般用木屑、煤為原料，經炭化、活化、磨粉等工藝制成，主要應用于靜態吸附操作(間歇式操作)處理給水除臭、除味以及規模較小的工業或城市污水處理。
顆粒活性炭：按不同的材質可分為椰殼活性炭、果殼活性炭和煤質活性炭。
